Leeds Museums and Galleries is a family of heritage sites, museums, country house estates and a flagship art gallery.

Established in 1821, Leeds Museums and Galleries is the largest local authority-run museum service in England and has one of the most significant multidisciplinary collections in the UK.

The Leeds Museums & Galleries is comprised of 9 outstanding venues across Leeds. We created a website that features each of the venues’ main functions, events, exhibitions, events, activities, learning workshops, and news.

Using WordPress theming and templating, we were able to give each of the venue a design of its own. The website is equipped with ecommerce, advanced searching and filtering, events management, and it is accessible to people with disabilities.

For a large project such as Leeds Museums & Galleries, we are always met with the challenge of how to present content in an informational way while still keeping visitors engaged in the website.

The nine venues would all be featured in the website and each of them has their own branding and concept. More than the aesthetics, we have developed a system in which each of the venues can manage their own blog posts, workshops, events, etc. With training and guidance, the venues publish their own content successfully.

Building the website with the 9 venues in mind is very challenging, but with good communication and goal-setting with the venue admins, our team were able to assemble a well-functioning content-rich website.

After launch, the site was further developed to comply with accessibility standards.

The site is fully responsive and works equally well across all platforms – desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile. Aside from that, the website’s colour contrast, focusability, easy navigation, headings, and content are improved thereby giving visitors a much better browsing experience.

Being an accessibility compliant website ensures that a wide range of people can use it, especially people with disabilities. Today, it is being visited by more than a hundred thousand people monthly.
